Attractive 1850 Dated Whitney Mississippi Rifle in Original .54 Caliber
Item #: CS474
This is a very attractive and well marked original "Mississippi" pattern rifle. This is officially known as the U.S. model 1841 rifle. They got their "Mississippi" nickname during the Mexican War when a regiment under Command of Jefferson Davis of Mississippi used them with great effectiveness. They stand out from across the room because of all the brass furniture they use. They have the classic brass patch box, triggergaurd, butt plate, barrel bands and even the tip of the ramrod has brass. This one has the manufacture date 1850 on the lock plate to accompany the very desirable makers mark of the famous company founded by Eli Whitney. Yes it is the same Whitney that is credited with inventing the cotton gin. From 1843 to 1855, Whitney made 26,500of these Mississippi Rifles under four contracts. They are considered by many people, including myself, to be one of the most attractive weapons in the U.S. military history. The action works crisply on all positions. All of the brass parts have a great golden color. The barrel is full length and you can see the correct inspectors marks at the breech to go along with the clear 1850 production date. It is still in the original .54 cal bore size. The front and rear sites are intact and original. The sling swivels are present and original. The ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel is a fine original one with the brass style end that was used before 1855. The stock on this gun has a rich look with fine grain walnut. On the flat of the stock opposite of the lockplate it has clear inspector cartouche stamps remaining. This is where the government inspector approved the weapon for military use. This is fine , complete and nice quality example of the popular "Mississippi" rifle from the famous Eli Whitney Company.
